Waxing 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment
If you've been thinking about trying waxing but keep putting it off, you're not alone.
For many, the first appointment comes with a lot of questions — what it feels like, how to prepare, and whether it's the right choice. It's completely normal to feel unsure at the beginning.
The reality is, once you know what to expect, the experience feels much more straightforward than it seems.
What Is Waxing?
Waxing is a method of hair removal that removes hair from the root rather than just the surface.
This means smoother skin that lasts longer — usually a few weeks, depending on your natural hair growth. Over time, many people notice that their hair grows back finer and less dense.
There are two main types of wax used:
- Hard wax, which is gentler and commonly used for sensitive areas
- Soft wax, which is more efficient for larger areas like legs and arms
At Simply Beauty Salon & Spa, we mainly work with Lycon wax — an Australian-made, low-temperature formula known for being gentler on the skin while still giving a clean, precise result. The choice between hard and soft wax depends on the area and your skin type, and is always adjusted to make the process as comfortable as possible.
Before Your Appointment
A little preparation can make a noticeable difference.
- Make sure the hair is long enough (about the length of a grain of rice)
- Gently exfoliate a couple of days before your appointment
- Avoid applying lotions or oils on the day
These small steps help the wax grip the hair properly and make the process smoother overall.
During the Appointment
Your therapist will begin by preparing the skin, ensuring it's clean and ready.
The wax is applied and removed in a controlled motion. The sensation varies depending on the area, but most people find it more manageable than they expected — especially after the first session.
If it's your first time, it helps to simply relax and take it step by step. A calm environment and a steady pace make all the difference.
After Your Appointment
It's normal for the skin to feel slightly sensitive right after waxing.
To keep the skin calm and smooth:
- Avoid heat, exercise, or sun exposure for the first 24 hours
- Wear loose clothing on freshly waxed areas
- Start gentle exfoliation after a couple of days to prevent ingrown hairs
With the right aftercare, your skin stays smooth and comfortable for longer.
A Simple Routine That Gets Easier Over Time
Waxing tends to become easier with consistency.
As your hair growth adapts, appointments feel quicker, and results often last longer.
It gradually becomes part of a routine rather than something unfamiliar.
When You're Ready to Try
Starting something new always comes with a bit of hesitation — but it often turns out to be much simpler than expected.
At Simply Beauty Salon & Spa, our therapists use Lycon wax and focus on making the experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible, especially for first-time clients.
